Our Art

Chugoku Kenpo can also mean Chinese fist methods, sometimes also known as Manchurian Kenpo. However, any of the Chinese boxing arts and/or Kung Fu forms as practiced in Japan can be considered forms of Chugoku Kenpo. Sometimes we come across Chugoku Kenpo Gojuken, this is because Chugoku can be either a hard or soft fist art depending on the style Nobori-Ryu (up-dragon, northern style) or Kudari-Ryu (down dragon, southern style), the technique can also be hard and/or soft depending on technique being used and level of practitioner.

Kempo and/or Kenpo is the Japanese term for Chinese Temple Boxing, or organized kung fu known as ch'uan fa (quanfa) in mandarin or ken fat in Cantonese. In Japan, Kenpo refers to Shorin-ji Kenpo (Shaolin temple boxing), Chugoku Kenpo (Chinese boxing), Nihon Kenpo (Japanese boxing), as well as Manchurian Kenpo.

We teach the Down Dragon system of the Chinese Secret Science of the Law of the Fist and of the Empty Hand. This system is a Japanese art of Chinese ancestry. The techniques are of the Chuan Fa Family of Arts, (The Way of the Fist or Fist Style). This also shows in our technique because of our use of mostly hands. Our kicks are mostly low and quick. We bow to the Japanese flag, our Senior Instructors, and the Founders of our organization who are Japanese. Sensei Jose's instruction was surely Japanese Psychologically and Physiological based.

After all, Sensei Ameta is Japanese and a very proud one!

Our History

The name Dragon Cloud Dojo was given to the school as an extension of the Dojo in Misawa, Japan. Misawa is located in the northeastern tip of the big Island of Honshu, Japan. CHU GO KU KENPO KARATE also known as MANCHURIAN KENPO is separated into two schools Nobori-Ryu (Up-Dragon School) and the other Kudari-Ryu (Down Dragon School). The type of CHU GO KU KENPO KARATE that is practiced and taught at Dragon Cloud Dojo U.S.A. is Kudari-Ryu (Down Dragon School).
  • Kudari – Ryu     Down Dragon      Southern Style
  • Nobori - Ryu       Up Dragon           Northern Style
CHU GO KU KENPO KARATE has no affiliation or lineage to any of the Hawaiian Kenpo styles and/or any of the modern American Kenpo Styles including Ed Parker, Nick Cerio, James Mitose, and Ralph Castro. CHU GO KU KENPO KARATE a southern style, Kung-Fu, Martial Art practiced in Northern China, just above Korea during the Emperor Shi Huangti's rein, who's history is retroactive back some 1,800 years, was the substance and catalyst of the now modern and hybrid style of Manchuria. This Hybrid style that combines the best of techniques, a mixture of Japanese Karate and Manchurian Chinese Kenpo offers the best of both art forms, Hard & Soft. This Art form was developed and refined in Manchuria during the second Japanese occupation. The first occupation was after Chinese defeat in the Sino-Japanese war (1894-95), in which Japan briefly gained control of the Liaodong Peninsula. In 1931 a Japanese army again invaded and occupied the region. The Japanese renamed it Manchukuo, which existed as a nominally independent Japanese-dominated state from 1934 to 1945. It was during this time Master Shibata Ryugen worked at Manchuria Railways. Later he married a woman from that country and received CHU GO KU KENPO KARATE instruction from Master Ryutoku in the agricultural town of Ryumonkyo. Both Masters, Master Shu Ryutoku and Master Shibata Ryugen returned to Japan at the end of World War II.

The Founder Shu Ryutoku, also known as “ Li Ryutoku “ and teacher of Master Shibata Ryugen, nick named “ An Ryugen”, both return to Japan from Manchuria between the years of 1944 and 1946. The exact date and year are unknown.

Sensei Yasuzo Ameta, became Master Shibata Ryugen’s private pupil in 1948, at 19 years of age. Master Yasuzo Ameta is currently 81 years old and head of the Dragon Cloud Dojo, organization in Japan. In 1979 Master Ameta was appointed Managing Director and Executive of the Amori Prefecture Karate-Do Headquarters. Master Shibata Ryugen, passed away at the age of 73 years old, in the Spring of 1962. Leaving Master Yasuzo Ameta to carry on the teaching of the art.

Dragon Cloud Dojo, U.S.A, teaches the art of “CHUGOKU KENPO KARATE” which is rooted and based on the systematic study of a variety of Chinese traditional fighting arts, which together comprise the martial arts history of China in Japan. Chugoku Kenpo Karate is extremely well organized and seeks to integrate and explore all aspects of traditional Chinese martial arts within the Japanese culture. As a martial arts system, Chugoku Kenpo Karate covers the entire continuum of established Chinese, Japanese & Okinawa (Asian) fighting arts and conditioning techniques for the Mind, Body and Soul. It is based on attack and defense, emphasizing physical training and mental discipline. This method teaches the techniques of blocking, punching, striking, kicking, choking, joint locking and throws. Weapons training (Kobudo) was added to the Dragon Cloud Dojo curriculum in 1979 by Sensei Hernandez, upon his return to California from Okinawa.

History & Development
The art of Kobu-Jutsu is that of fighting with the aid of adapted farming implements of the far east. Tradition credits Okinawa as the source country for these arts due to the 15th century suppression of that country by the Japanese. Like all conquerors, the Japanese forbade the local inhabitants to possess any weapons. As a result farming implements were adapted and used as a means of self defense. This story is very likely to be basically true but it seems highly probably that the use of farming tools for fighting was an ancient art throughout the Far east long before the Japanese set foot on the Isle of Okinawa. In ancient times wars were a frequent occurrence. These were fought between petty rulers in the vast majority of cases and were often little more than glorified cattle raids. The armies lived off the country they passed through and any village near the line of march was usually pillaged to the bone. If the villagers had sufficient warning of the army's approach they may have been able to hide grain and livestock to enable them to survive the coming winter and start again. If not then the survivors of the army's passing were reduced to banditry in order to live. The old, the weak and the very young soon perished and rival factions would soon reduce any large group to a number of small, highly mobile bands. Other villages throughout the country soon learned to fear these outlaw bands. Forbidden by their local lords to arm themselves they looked to their everyday farming tools for means of defending themselves. The edged tools such as the Kama (sickles) had obvious value but other tools soon showed themselves to have surprising possibilities. Among these were the Tonfa, Nunchaku, Bo and Sai. Kobudo like Karate developed into an Art of many different styles, Ufuchiku Kobudo is but one of the many weapons fighting styles of Okinawa. Sensei Hernandez has dedicated his life to Martial arts training and his Journey of Kenpo Karate and Kobudo. His Karate experience ranges 57 years and he has trained and studied with a few great Masters in the United States and aboard in the orient.

We at Dragon Cloud Dojo practice Kobudo arts for a variety of reasons: To make the weapons an extension of our bodies, to improve our skill and use of the weapons, and to acquaint ourselves with the ranges of attack & defense on a different subconscious plane which is a different level than with empty hand techniques. We strive to improve our empty hand art’s and understanding of weapon disarmament such as in techniques learned in Jutte and other tradional kata. And of course to preserve the history of Kobudo and it’s kata.

Meeting & Introduction: Sensei Hernandez met Master Kina shortly (within the first 2 weeks) after arriving at Kadena Air Base, in the Spring of 1979. He was stationed there on temporary duty assignment. He spent just under six months learning Ufuchiku Kobudo one of the indigenous arts of the Ryukyu Islands from Kina Sensei. His formal introduction to Master Kina was via other serviceman. Sifu Wright introduced Sensei Hernandez to Sensei Anthony Marquez, who in turn introduced him to Kina Sensei.
